Walka walka walka walka Peggy Sue*

I walked to work this morning after working out- it was great: Sunny, without a cloud in the sky. It wasn't very warm, but once I got walking, it was great. I had a little Pet Shop Boys and Infected Mushroom to keep me on pace and not be late and I had a strawberry banana smoothie to sip on the way. There were critters galore...

I love it when a plan comes together.

Lately I seem to have a "buzz" for getting organised, so I'm going to run with it over the next few weeks and see where it gets me -like this weekend: I have to start repainting the window trim on the house. I'm up for a busy summer, but that's how I like it. I actually made a list last night of all the crap I need to get to this summer...it's a long one. BUT with any luck I'll be able to crash through most of them...

Hmmm...my stomach is growling like I swallowed a gremlin, so I am off for a granola bar and coffee...
Have a great day!

*My sister in law thought these actually were the words to the chorus of Peggy Sue. Now whenever I go for a long walk it pops into my head...

Sweet sweet jedi love, some fish and a whole lotta psytrance going on

My cat's lurid affair with a certain well known jedi master is continuing. They're brazen I tell you - they don't care who sees them snuggling up in the lounger chair - It's right by the front window and everything. I've had a chat with him about it, but he just bonked me on the head and went right back into the arms of his jedi love...what can you do? Jedi's have it going on...

It's been a busy time here at Casa del Geo. First a wonderful time away at Motion Notion. Other than a bit of rain the first night the weather was great - not too hot. And there was an incredible amount of psytrance music playing, along with visiting a bunch of friends I haven't seen since last year. 3 stages of great music, and great people. There was even a stage on the beach this year playing loungy funky music for us as we lounged in the sun and swam in the river. I invested in a water ring with a backrest and I must say - *that* is life! The cursed vegan food vendors put a bit of a damper on my final night there (gave me a touch of the my-supper-not-liking-where-I-put-it-itis) but luckily I felt better as the evening went on and the main stage had hammocks built into it, so I could lounge and nurse my tummy in comfort while swinging back and forth to the music. The bear head came out to play once again, and I had a very relaxing wonderful time...we came back with a few days off to get organised and lounge around before going back to work. I will post some photos in a day or so, when I'm home for more than a few minutes :)

This past weekend we were up visiting my parents at the lake. I don't get to see them often enough it seems, so we figured we'd better head up and see them for the weekend since we had a free weekend. Saturday was lovely - sunny and hot. Usually the weather is sucky at best when we go up so we took advantage of it and went fishing on Cub lake with my Dad and my uncle. Cub lake is great, as you have to take an old logging road in and then ride about 10 minutes in on a quad trail with your little motor, jackets and fish tackle bungeed to the quad to get to the lake itself. My Dad keeps an old metal punt boat in there at the lake, so we rode in and spent the afternoon casting for lake trout in the sun, sipping rum and coke, with the smell of my Uncle's cigars floating in the air. There were loons doing a crazy "Don't come near me - look at how big and menacing I am! Stay back!" dance...and there was a beaver by a dam...and we caught 14 fish. Yum. I caught 5 myself - and one of them was huge! I've taken a bunch home...I can't wait to bake them up with some lemon and dill. Yum.
We also got to swim in the lake and have a great barbecue out on the deck for supper, along with some dominoes later in the night. J's Mum sent up a saskatoon pie, so we had that, and some of my beer and some tasty pork chops and potatoes for supper. Because I'm dumb sometimes (oops) I forgot one of my medications, so we had to head back early sunday, but it was a nice short visit, and I spent the afternoon on sunday catching up on some reading, some chores and making rhubarb crumble.

So yeah....I've been busy, but I'm happy. I have a crapload of work to do this week as I'm taking off the first 2 weeks of August to go to Shambhala, and this week is the Fringe Theatre festival, which J is covering (so we get to see lots of shows for free - mee hee!) so it just won't slow down til mid august...so if I"m not posting much, it's not that I don't luvs you all. I'm just busy with life and having too great a time to do anything other than sleep when I get an odd minute free.

Hope you've all been having a great summer so far.
Have a great day!

Picture pages picture pages....

Cuz I'm baking up a storm and busy busy, here is a brief overview of my hectic week in pictures:

The best beer in the world. No there is no contest...no need. Strawbeery fields reigns supreme - a light fruity taste in a mild wheaty ale. Not too sweet, and thirst quenching...pity there's only a little. Here's the test photos...

And the geek was absolute cuteness as he slept. Can't not post a gratuitous cat photo of sleepy cuteness...
And we're not to bad either...we clean up nice for weddings and family gatherings...

Later taters.
Off to monkey dance :)

Kipple

Isidore in "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" defines kipple as:

"Kipple is useless objects, like junk mail or match folders after you use the last match or gum wrappers of yesterday’s homeopape. When nobody’s around, kipple reproduces itself. For instance, if you go to bed leaving any kipple around your apartment, when you wake up the next morning there’s twice as much of it. It always gets more and more.”

She goes on to say that “…the First Law of Kipple (is that) ‘Kipple drives out nonkipple’… No one can win against kipple, except temporarily and maybe in one spot, like in my apartment. I’ve sort of created a stasis between the pressure of kipple and nonkipple, for the time being. But eventually I’ll die or go away, and then the kipple will take over. It’s a universal principal operating throughout the universe; the entire universe is moving towards a final state of total, absolute kippleization.”

I am fighting the kipple.
I hope it won't return to my living room when we put the stuff back in it...but you can never be sure. ...

Dandy

I don't have much to say...I just stumbled across this picture of The Dandy Warhols while hunting down this video (not their best). Most of the video is tacky, and the song is average, but it doesn't get better than dancing syringes and for some reason I needed a bit of that to get ready to face today - yesterday was a long sucky tired day at work and today will be a long one too. I remembered this video from when I was much much younger and I figured it'd make me smile. I was not wrong.
I have to admit, when I think about it, that the Dandy's make sucky vidoes...but live they are one of the best bands I have ever seen. They do have a lot of great albums and better songs than the one above like this or this or this (warning: willies)or this (warning: this is uberlame. I feel embarrased for them just watching it).
I will say though, at the risk of tossed objects, the photo is dandy.
We now return you to your regularly programmed day.
Yup. Good luck with that.

They're justified and they're ancient...and they drive an ice cream van

The last train left an hour ago, They were singing "All aboard. All bound for Mu Mu Land"
Then someone starting screaming "Turn up the Strobe" ...

Well I woke up this morning, worked out and feel absolutely giddy with energy for no damn good reason, but you know what?
I'll take it :)

I spent last night restocking our house and pantry after striking and chrsitmas and all that...it seems we've officially gotten past the strike and holidays, and now have all the bills caught up and food and things are stocked up again. It was a lot of stuff, but I'm a hoard for emergency sort of girl, and it helped us out in the past few tight months...I feel more at ease with things all topped up again (and more than a bit justified about doing it).
And as a bit of a treat, a CD we tracked down on ebay arrived and we had a listen. It's an old out of print KLF remix EP with All Bound for Mumu Land and a few other tracks on it. One of the tracks even had Tammy Wynette singing vocals...not sure why, but it was good. I like hunting down odd music and having a listen, particularly remixes or side projects by musicians I already enjoy...it's not always good, but mostly we've been lucky.
Then next obscure album on my *want* list is the Space CD put together by Jimmy Caudy and Alex Patterson. It was originally to be the first Orb album, and is a bit of a concept electronic album, with a track for every planet in the solar system...it is out of print and very hard to find. The KLF, in a fit of pique, deleted their entire catalog when they broke up, so a lot of their older stuff, like this album and the EP we just got, is hard to get, even pirated copies. I'm a "support the artist" sort, so I've tried my best to get the actual albums of things, but it's tricky sometimes. I've bid on a few of them when they come up on ebay, but they're pretty pricey and I always seem to lose out (I just can' t justify over $75 on a CD). I don't really care if I own an original...I just want to hear it.
But I digress...

Have a wonderful day everyone. I know I will. I'm off to anexperiment..:)
Later tater.

Go me

Just popped in to announce that I've just entered my one thousandth data file.
Yup...that's 1000.
And only about 400 left.
I can see the end...sort of.

At least the "done" pile is visibly higher than the "dear god I still have to enter all of those" pile.
Go me.

Fluffy puff

It's funny...I've been waiting for lots of snow for ages and we've finally had days of the fluffy stuff. It's great...altho I'm finding already that shovelling snow is turning into making the bed...you know, why do it when you'll just have to do it again tomorrow?

But I love it all, as it's so pretty. And after being out picketing for ages in the cold, now, it's nothing to shovel or just go for a walk in the cold...kinda fun actually. I"m sure it will wear off, but for now it's great.
It's getting me all festive and holidayey. This weekend is "coat the home in lights" time and the tree will go up. I love Christmas for all the lights and shiney things.
It makes me feel so much better just sitting in a blinky room with some tea...
but til then....well, more shovelling (and data) :)

Does not compute

So far I've typed in nearly 180 data sets.
Only 1300 odd more to go...for the first project. There may be more.
That's a lot of data.
I'm ectremely grateful to have work to do at home...10 hours in and I think I've got the hang of it.
It looks I should be able to help keep it together...and with any luck this strike won't go on for too much longer.

Must be off for my frozen wanderings... but first *this*: Stolen from Diddums...done as a break from all that data...

All Yingy and Yangy with wobbly spurts in the middle

This weekend was both utterly amazing and totally annoying.
There was a dance party- a Star Wars themed one, and the music was amazing. My mellinium falcon was a tiny part of the decorations and the music was fabulous. The whole building was decorated up with rooms for Endor, The jedi palace, Mon Calamari and other themed rooms with comfy furniture. 4 different rooms of music all night...very good.
On the downside...still on strike, broke as hell now weekend and some prick put 2 dents in our car that must be fixed (and I can't really afford to but can't not do it)...and a friend's dog ate one of JJ's favorite shoes. I know money shouldn't be a problem, but it is getting to be...I don't even want to know the cost of car repairs.

So yeah...ying and yang all in a few days.
We did get to see Beowulf in 3D IMAX (really fantastic) and the weekend was an overall good one...we tried to be "normal" for a few days. It's just that being back here in "real life" and picketing in -20ish with snow and wind is daunting...but it can't go on forever. We had our vote today on our crappy offer form the University. I hope it was voted down "no" very strongly and we can end this soon in negottiations. We'll know by the evening.

I will try my best to be optimistic...we'll see how it goes. And I'll post some photos from the Star Wars shindig in a little while...I didn't make a big costume this year...no $$ or time, but I did dress up like Luke on Dagobah and have a lightsaber on my belt and my yoda on my back. It really was a great time all in all...one of the DJs kept playing all my favorite songs in his set...and there were performing bellydancers that were amazing - one girl danced with 2 swords balanced on her head. Wow.
But now, I must go do some data entry. I picked up a bit of work I can do at home for some $$ and should get at it so we can pay some bills...I am trying to avoid going to retail...we'll see.
Later tater...

Oh Captain my Captain

Where I work (well used to) is a huge campus, and our strike teams are at every entrance into campus to make sure our presence is noted.
The past 13 days have been a real school in human nature. At this point I'm quite pleased and amused at how everyone is banding together and I have met so many people from all over and had a lot of interesting conversations with people who work in fields I normally wouldn't run into.
And a cool thing is, we've sort of adopted our picket homes...and some have developed nicknames. The one near the Med school is Club Med (not too original) and Hawaii (it's the sunny corner). Out where I am on the edge of campus by the research fields, synchrotron and satellite array, the wind whistles thru with a vengeance and the furthest stations are now known as Siberia and Mars.
And I am so very happy to say I am a Captain on Mars. And I'm even more please that I had nothing to do with the naming of it...it just happened.
We're talking of making our own flag for morale, and I'm trying to think of some sort of Mars cake for friday for all on my team for putting in 2 weeks out here in the Mars wasteland. I may even get a "I spent ** days on Mars and all I got was this Tshirt" printed up on iron on logos for our teams when this is all over...
I must say - I'm glad to know these people. When things started there was a lot of uncertainty and whining and I was less than impressed, but we've all banded together and we're stronger now for a common cause. We're cheering each other up and on days like yesterday with snow and gusting wind warnings from winds over 105 Km an hour you need friends to keep you smiling. So it's my duty as captain to try and keep them happy.
*grin*
Happy Captain on Mars...gotta love it.

So it begins...

Ah ha ha HA!
I was at the grocers today and what did I find?
Nothing less than seasonal nectar of the gods....egg nog.
Yum.
And so I have begun my seasonal holiday breakfast indulgence....eggnog pancakes.

Oh yeah. Sooooo good...

I was so happy with breakfast I must pass on the secret formula (with years of tweaking by yours truly) so you all could have some too...

SWEET NOGGIN' CAKES

1 1/2 c flour
1 1/2 t baking powder
1/2 t baking soda
1/4 t salt
2 T melted butter
2 T sugar
1 egg blended
1 1/2 c eggnog
dash nutmeg

Mix dry together and mix wet together...then mix them BOTH together...but don't overmix. Use ~ 1/3 c batter and fry in a bit of oil on med/low heat, flipping when golden brown and bubbled. Serve with bacon and syrup.
These are guaranteed to get you a kiss or two of gratitude.
Seriously...works for me every time.

But now...I must dash. We've spent a great day out walking in the woods and have been to the Mendel gallery to check out the display of automitons and animated exhibits (cool...) and we're off to a charity shindig to hear a good breaks DJ from calgary Peter Wilde spin a bit. I plan on shaking my posterier faster than the speed of light -for charity no less. It will be nice to leave my troubles far behind for a while. Great end to a great day.

Let the monkeydancing begin!

Rocking hard with disco lighting

Heh...sometimes words decribing athought just pop out. Nobody else like that? I am. Being awesome to the point that you have the accompaniment of fabulous lighting seems to be a great compliment to me...but then I like crazy lighting. Suppose it won't be the next catch phrase or anything, but I'll keep using it I think. Well...unless I get mocked too much.
And I really do like the sound of it...tho it's a bit wierd.
But then so am I.

Yesterday was great. It was cold, but we decided to boost morale with lots of walking and chanting and waving and trying to get cars to honk and read our picket signs. Lots of faculty and staff and students were out to support us. It felt good...hope today goes as well. The employer hasn't even tried to meet with us yet...*sigh*

I've had a lot to think about lately what with 4 hours a day in the bracing cold...lately my focus has been politics, as today is our provincial election day. All you people in Saskatchewan - remember to vote. It's going to be a close call this time, and we all need to speak to be sure our future governement is one we chose. As always, for voter etiquitte - you cannot eat your ballot (I checked - honest, it's illegal - it says so right on the FAQ of the election site), and polls are open all day. Let's make sure the government that takes us forward for the next 4 years is one we've chosen carefully. We've got to diametrically opposed main parties - NDP (prounion/labour) VS the Sask Party (ie. conservative party - probusiness). We must choose wisely as I really think the direction of the province is at stake. I, for one, love my home - I want it to be unique and grow at it's own pace. I've looked around and I like what I see and disagree with the other parties other than NDP myself...they seem to have the best interest of us all in mind - but that's just my opinion. Our province is right down the middle between those 2 parties with Liberal and Green Party making up the remnants. I am so very curious to see how it swings. I don't want my home to be forced to grow out of scale to try and keep up with larger centres...we're just not there yet. Right now we're small, but thriving. We have crown corporations run by our province that give us our power and gas and phone that keep our rates realistic for a province of few people. I really think our future is something still unfolding - We should be what we are and be proud of it...whatever that develops into.
We shall see what the future holds.
My immediate future? Chilly and windy with excessive dancing and picket waving coming in in the afternoon, with toasty drinks and Babylon 5 sweeping in in the evening.
Yes...it is my goal today to rock hard with disco lighting.
Not bad really.

Silly bear, ritalin is for kids

Why oh why did I offer to come in and work on a Saturday?

BOORRIINNGG!!!

So, I'm trying to fill my incubation times with some online reading...and now I have a question:
Recent published studies have shown that Ritalin has lasting effects on the developments of children (physical and mental) with long exposure. Duh. What did people honestly think giving a stimulant to a child for years would do to them? Make them into superhumans? Give them special powers? Especially kids that are a bit different and need some extra time and help to get it right.

How about spending time with your kids? I'm willing to bet that very VERY few kids actually prescribed medication actually need them. Now I'm not a parent so maybe I'm talking out of my ass here, but how are kids going to learn to deal with their problems and interact and know what's right and good if they're not taught? Not helped? Maybe they need extra time spent with them. We're all so busy rushing around with our lives and expect kids to just anty up and fit into life. They're children. They sould run, jump, play and learn how to do all the things they need to do from ALL of us. It really takes a community to raise a child, not a TV and some Ritalin...it's one of the reasons I haven't had any children yet. It's scary and a big commitment...

Am I way off here? My brother and I grew up with little TV and lots of books and games and although my parents both worked a lot and we were on our own a lot we coped and turned out OK, although we're pretty normal by most standards. We were taught about consequences and how to be real people...I figure we didn't turn out too bad.
But then again I'm dancing around with a bear head on so maybe I'm not the one to be talking...

Take a deep breath and begin...

Hoo boy.
Yesterday everything I did in the lab screwed up somehow. Nothing fatally, but enough to make for a miserable day. Then lots of not getting info from ebay for hours and hours. All in all not a fun day.
BUT today is another day and I have tomorrow off, so I just have to make it through today and get things caught up and done. And maybe, just maybe I won't break/spill/crash/forget anything today...
I'm taking a deep breath and diving into things.
Wish me luck!!

Zombie f*ckers unite for proper ratings

Online Dating

Hmmm...apparently a riotous use of the words d*mn and f*ck can still keep you in the General category...altho come to think of it, I do bleep with ***'s a lot. Even so, apparently I'd better watch using words like death (once) and zombie (4 times) - as they matter in the ratings system.
Nah. On second thought, I'll go the more colourful route and try again later to see where I'm at...

Humph.
I thought I'd at *least* be PG.

Off topic, I still recall when my Mom thought movie ratings were G for good, PG for pretty good and R for Rude.
:)

Hmmmm....um....

Fucking A!

***whoooosh!***

Heh...there.

Much better. I redid it now and apparently using that *and* zombie together in a weblog post makes me now officially PG.
Aaahh.
I knew I had it in me...
